Freedom Camping

22nd December 2010

freedom_campingCampers are being encouraged to stay in holiday parks, DOC camping grounds or other designated areas this summer.

Posters and stickers distributed to holiday parks, rental vehicle operators, Department of Conservation visitor centres, i-SITE visitor centres, youth hostels, councils and international airports this month also urge visitors to contact local information centres before setting up camp.

The posters, produced by the New Zealand Freedom Camping Forum, aim to reduce the negative impacts on New Zealand environments by encouraging campers to "Assume nothing - always ask" before setting up camp. In addition, 15,000 leaflets have been printed for the Cook Strait ferry operators to hand out to all van drivers (north and south bound) over the summer months.

They include basic information about where campers can stop for the night, depending on whether or not they are fully self contained. The posters also suggest local information sources where campers can find more information, such as i-SITE visitor centres, Department of Conservation visitor centres and holiday parks.

Forum chairman and Tourism Industry Association Advocacy Manager Geoff Ensor said freedom camping rules varied by region so it was important to provide visitors with good agreed information about where they could camp.

The majority of campervan rental operators were now strongly recommending that their clients stay in holiday parks, Department of Conservation camping areas or other designated camping areas, he said.

The posters have been distributed to hundreds of holiday parks, rental vehicle operators and other tourism companies around the country. Tourism businesses that wish to download and display a poster can choose from five variations. To view and download a poster, visit the New Zealand Freedom Camping Forum's website.
