A vast amount of tourism industry research data is available, including data broken-down by region and sector. Most of this information is available on the Tourism Research Council website. We have provided a summary of the latest data below.
The Commercial Accommodation Monitor information on tourism and accommodation for Nelson Tasman Tourism relates to the Nelson City and Tasman District territorial authority areas. The information presented in this monitor is collected via the Accommodation Survey, a monthly survey run by Statistics New Zealand and sponsored by regional tourism organisations. The objective of this monitor is to provide key information about the accommodation industry that is comprehensive and impartial.

We are currently working on a summary of commercial accommodation trends over the past five years. In addition, we will be researching the number of operators per sector and investigate if there has been an increasing or decreasing trend over the past decade.

Nelson Tasman Tourism also hopes to undertake an independent Economic Contribution Research Survey in 2011 with industry to try and ascertain the total economic contribution the tourism industry makes to the regional economy and compare it with EDA, BERL and Statistics NZ data. This we hope will assist Councils and the community with understanding more comprehensively the importance and benefit of tourism as an economic driver in the region.
A Snapshot of economic contribution by tourism to Nelson Tasman and New Zealand
Data produced by BERL Economics in July 2010, shows that 7.5% of Full Time Equivalents are employed by tourism related businesses in Nelson Tasman, compared to 5.2% nationally. Tourism makes up 5.5% of the region's GDP compared with 3.8% nationally. We have 701 tourism related businesses which account for 5.8% of businesses in the region. This compares with 3.9% of businesses in NZ.

Growth of tourism within Nelson Tasman compared with the National Average
The Commercial Accomodation monitor the source for the following data, which is gathered from commercial accommodation providers who pay GST. It excludes those travellers staying in B&Bs or holiday homes, and those visiting friends and relatives. While the data has limitations in this regard, it provides us with a method of measuring trends and making comparisons with other regions.

Growth in Domestic Guest Nights compared with the National Average
Year ended September 2010 shows the growth rate of domestic visitors for the national average growth rate was 1.2%, compared with year-end growth in Nelson Tasman of 2.4%. It was interesting to note that for the year ended September 2010, the number of Trips abroad by NZ residents increased by 4.2% to just under 2 Million showing that current "deals" into Australia and the Pacific Islands is competing hard for our New Zealand-based visitors.
