...where our natural attractions will take your breath away!
If you're short on time when travelling around New Zealand, the Nelson Tasman region will provide a snapshot of all the magnificent scenery and outdoor activities you could wish for. We host three of New Zealand's fourteen national parks and the Mt Richmond Forest Park is the second largest of twenty forest parks.
The Abel Tasman National Park, the smallest national park in New Zealand is home to many nature experiences featuring kayaking, sailing, seal colonies and guided tours. The Nelson Lakes National Park offers a unique high country alpine hiking experience with spectacular scenery and water activities on Lake Rotoiti and Lake Rotoroa. The alpine lakes being fantastic for kayaking, biking and freshwater swimming - fresh but breathtaking! The Kahurangi National Park is home to one of New Zealand's Great Walks, the Heaphy Track. Weave your way across millions of year-old karst rock outcrops, rich native forests and make your way along riverbeds out to the West Coast towards Karamea. A great walk and in winter, our newest mountainbiking track.
For nature lovers and bird enthusiasts the region is home to one of New Zealand's most important ecological locations at Farewell Spit. Farewell Spit is New Zealand's longest natural sand bar stretching for 35kms and is a recognised world-class bird sanctuary and wetland area, home to many migratory birds. The Spit is more strictly protected than a national park.
