Things to See and Do

Discover New Zealand's best kept secret, the Nelson region, home to three of New Zealand's most spectacular National Parks with hiking, sea-kayaking, cruising, canyoning, biking, stand-up paddleboarding and great seafood, wine and beer on offer.

The compact geography means most activities are within 1-2 hours drive of the city. We have rental vehicles, guided coach/minivan tours and a great accessible airport if arriving by air. It's really easy to get around.

Come October the Nelson Tasman region offers even more enticing reasons to visit, discover and enjoy. To celebrate, Nelson Tasman Tourism is offering those living outside the region the chance to Win a Weekend.

  1. Get above the bushline

There are many great tramps in the Nelson Lakes National Park. One of my favourites is the walk from the Lake Rotoiti car park to Bushline Hut. It's an easy one to three hour walk that gets you quickly up above the bushline, where you can access many other tracks and play in the snow in winter.

  2. Involution mountain biking trail

view more about Nelson & Richmond

There is a new mountain biking track at the end of Marsden Valley Road called Involution - steady climb zip-zags up through native forest to the ridge line overlooking Monaco and Tasman Bay towards the Mt Arthur ranges. Makes a good half day return walk and is dog friendly - just watch out for bikes on their way down.
