You’re invited to Cawthron Institute’s Open Day 2017.
We’re throwing open the doors so bring the whole family and find out what happens behind the scenes at New Zealand’s largest independent science research organisation.
This Open Day is themed 'Healthy Freshwater' and you can expect:
- Interactive displays showing Cawthron’s world-leading science, suitable for adults and children.
- Freshwater fish, slimy algae, and wriggly macroinvertebrates.
- Interesting scheduled presentations from our scientists followed by question time.

10km FUN RUN/WALK
Run, Roll, Stroll - Slow or fast you'll have a blast!
This is a 10km fun run/walk course from Victory Community Centre to Saxton Field on smooth walkways.
A great family event. Run it, walk it, scooter, skateboard, wheelchair or push a pram but sorry no bikes.
Bikes are only allowed for children under 6 years who are with an adult (not on a bike).
FREE bus transportation before the event from Saxton Field to the start line at Victory Community Centre. Departure times are available on the website.
Note that anyone traveling with an under 6 year old who is riding a bike will not be permitted to take the bus with their bike. You will need to find your own transportation to the start line.
The course will use the city's excellent cycleways which are smooth paths, largely avoiding road traffic. Course maps are available on the event website.
Online registration at www.sporttasman.org.nz will open in March.
Lots of spot prizes and a special prize for one lucky family with three generations participating.

The fair has over 220 stallholders, made up of arts, crafts, garden, fairground and miscellaneous stalls, a school run café, second hand store and silent auction. In addition, the playcentre opens its gates to give a good space for younger children to play and families to relax. We offer a full day of free entertainment on stage and other free activities.. It’s a great day out catering for all ages.
From small beginning’s this has become Nelson region’s biggest fair with over 10,000 visitors each year. The fair is the key annual fundraiser for Mapua Primary School and Mapua Playcentre and is run entirely by volunteers overseen by the Mapua Easter Fair Charitable Trust.
6 Hours of fun riding through the Kaiteriteri Mountainbike Park.
Enter solo if you dare, or in relay-style teams of 2, 3 or 4 to share the 6 hours of riding.
Laps take approximately 20-30 minutes depending on fitness and ability, with the course suitable for those with basic mountainbike skills and above.
There's a fun vibe to the event, with many in fancy dress. Spot prizes through the day.
